They're located at 5712 Connecticut Ave. NW in Chevy Chase DC, right in Aura and Lou's neighborhood. We'll be playing two sets from 4:00-7:00. There will be lots of wine tasting with free snacks, and for those of you who truly understand wine, there will be a sommelier on site. This is a great chance to support some really sweet people running a great new local business. So some join us! And watch for lots more shows to be announced soon…
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/73278552024-01-03T16:43:44-05:002024-01-19T07:58:22-05:00Happy New Year!
Happy New Year from Band Brulee! We hope you all had a great Week 52. We'll be in hiding (and hopefully in the recording studio) in January, but we'll have lots of shows to announce soon. So join our email mailing list to stay up to date. And we recently (finally) joined instagram! I guess this social media thing looks like it's gonna stick around for a while. So if you haven't started following us yet, what are you waiting for? Stay warm, see you in March!
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/72520542023-08-04T13:43:25-04:002023-12-23T12:07:21-05:00Band Brulee on TV! So he's on the temporary disabled list. So we'll be playing this Saturday as a trio with Aura singing, Lou on Guitar, and Franklin on trumpet. We'll play two sets starting around 7:00 and 8:30ish. So make reservations for 15 to 30 minutes before one of these two sets to ensure you are settled before the music starts. We've played there on two Saturdays so far as a full band, but this will be our first time in that room as a quieter duo. We have tons of original and cover tunes we never play with the full band, built up from many months of duo gigs in Aura’s front yard during the height of lockdown — our neighborhood friends will find this a nostalgic treat, and we love a chance to distill our tunes down to pure vocals and guitar. And as you can see from this article, our friends at Bocca are serious about their Roman-style pizza and offer a wide range of Italian specialties. We really respect the efforts Bocca is making to support local music, and we've heard that Thursdays tend not to be as crowded as Saturday nights, so we'd love to help bring a crowd out for the good people at Bocca.

And for something a little sentimental, we just learned that Romano Vineyard & Winery is closing soon, so this Saturday April 29 (2:00-5:00) will be our last time there. Best of all, they have built a little stage, and they are now hosting local music! We played our first show there in January, and it was quite a scene. We'll try to top it in April. We have at least one drummer joining us, a first-timer named Alexey. He's never played with us before, not even a rehearsal, so it should be interesting. Also, I just heard that our original drummer Lex O'brien is in town, and we'll try to get him to join for a song or two. And Franklin says he might show up with his trumpet. Make reservations now! If there's a gap in available reservations (like from 7:30 to 8:00), don't worry about that. The restaurant does that so that a massive crowd doesn't all show up at once and overwhelm the staff right at the beginning of our set. We'll probably play two sets starting around 7:30 and 9:00ish. So make reservations for 15 to 30 minutes before one of these two sets to ensure you are settled before the music starts. Lou has personally tried it, and he fully approves. In addition to pizza, there's a wide range of Italian specialties, and a few of the neighborhood favorites have been brought down from Chevy Chase (like the addictive fried zucchini). Best of all, they have built a little stage, and they are starting to host local music! Aura, Lou, and Andrew will all be there. It's a small stage in a small room, so we'll probably do this one without drums. Watch this space for news on any other band members. We're hoping Franklin might be back on trumpet (He came over for some practice recently, and he sounded as great as ever).
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/71146002022-12-01T10:26:01-05:002023-12-10T12:33:56-05:00Saturday, December 3: Happy Go Bikes in Chevy Chase DC (4:00 pm)
We’ll be playing Saturday afternoon as part of the Spark Art Fest and Small Business Party on our little stretch of Connecticut Ave. We’ll be taking over my favorite bike store in the universe: Happy Go (5516 Connecticut Ave NW). On my visits for bike repairs, I’ve told the owner Ben that he has great acoustics in his small space, and I’d love to hear what my guitar sounds like bouncing off the walls and high ceiling. So when he called a couple of days ago to ask if we could do this, I quickly said yes. Aura, Andrew, and I will be playing this one as a trio.

Ben says there will be some sort of refreshments, but the details are still mysterious (he’s mentioned hot drinks and champaign, among other ideas that may or may not happen). There will be some benches set up, but if you want to be sure you can sit and be comfortable, Ben recommends bringing your own lawn chairs or something like that. I’m hoping this will feel a lot like our front lawn neighborhood shows - very casual, and we're open to requests and neighborhood guests. We'll start at 4:00 and play for at least an hour, maybe longer if we're having fun. It would be great if some of you could come join us.
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/71016852022-11-14T02:50:50-05:002022-11-14T02:50:50-05:00Hello from Asia!
Work is keeping us far away from music for the first half of November. See you then. Here are the details:

We'll be playing at National Harbor aiming our songs directly at people on the water (165 Waterfront Street, Oxen Hill, MD). Bring your boat (or rent a SUP board, kayak, or giant swan if you don't happen to have a yacht handy) for a refreshing night of #musiconthemarina with us. Our landlubbing friends can also listen from the boardwalk, so come for an adventure even if you prefer terra firma!

Each event in this summer-long series has a theme, and ours is Jazz Through the Ages - which we will interpret in the broadest sense possible. Come try something new with a refreshing night of music from a Brulee trio of Louis, Aura, and Franklin Wade on trumpet!

They were named best barbecue in the DC area by the Washington Post this year, so they're sort of a big deal. It's a private party with lots of local culinary luminaries, but if one of our Riverdale area friends shows up early, maybe you can sneak in by carrying one of Lou's guitars...

Ken Carter, the owner and head meadmaker, has provided a truly unique spot for music in our area. We need more creative places like this in the DC area, so I hope you can come support Ken (and us). Our drummer Mike can't join us this time, so we'll be an acoustic quartet with the great Franklin Wade sitting in on trumpet. Lots of details about Meadworks are on our shows page. We'll be playing as a full quintet with the great Franklin Wade on trumpet. Our drummer Mike won't be able to join, but here's some amazing news: Our original drummer Lex O'Brien is visiting from Austria this week, and he'll be taking his old seat behind the drums! We're excited to play some of our older songs from the Lex era that don't get played much these days. You can expect the return of "Count Sheep." Windridge is about a 35 minute drive from where we live in Northwest DC, and Lou recommends ordering Inferno pizza for a pickup on your way home after the music.
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/69137732022-03-04T12:41:10-05:002022-05-22T23:45:00-04:00Sunday afternoon at 2:30 on the front porch!
The only thing I miss about 2020 is the Sunday afternoon music out in our neighborhood. This coming Sunday afternoon is predicted to be 75 degrees, which seems perfect for outdoor music! So come join us back in our usual spot on the 5700 block of 33rd St NW.

We’ll be starting at 2:30 PM and probably playing for around 90 minutes. Maybe more.

This time, we’ll be a trio with Aura singing, Lou playing guitar, and our new friend Franklin Wade on trumpet! We met Franklin last November, and he’s joined us at almost every show since then. We played at a winery a few weeks ago as a small trio like this, and I really loved it. We're so excited to bring Franklin to our neighborhood! Great people, fun Latin American food, good margaritas, a great room for listening to music. We'll be playing some of the night as an acoustic trio, but we'll also have two special guests joining us. Taking Mike's seat on drums will be the great Rich Bloom. And I recently saw a trumpet player named Franklin Wade. I loved his playing, and last night, I invited him to come join us on Saturday. Apparently, he has an adventurous spirit, and he says he'll be coming. I have a long history of broken bones, and now I have a new one to add to the list. I broke my thumb last night. I was in denial until about two hours ago when the very kind Dr. Solomon at Montgomery orthopedics showed me the x-ray with a small bone chip. It’s a relatively minor injury, but to make sure it heals right, I have to stay away from the guitar for at least 10 days. Dr. Solomon says I should be ready for full activity in about three weeks.

So we have canceled the early September dates that were previously on the calendar. Right now, I expect the shows on September 17 and 25 to proceed as planned, although I will likely be comically out of practice.

I won’t be able to ride a bike during this time either because I can’t hold the handle bars and shift gears. Also, I can’t really write with a pen. So I’m going to need to find some new ways to occupy my time.

My broken bones never seem to arise from situations where one would expect any actual danger. This is the second bone I’ve broken without leaving the comfort of my own bedroom. Some of you may know our song called Plan B (with the chorus “I didn’t see that comin’ at me…”). I think it’s the only song I’ve written about my predilection for unexpected pointless injuries. When I can play guitar and hold a pen again, I may dive deeper into this topic.

Anyway, September 17 should be a great night. Wind Ridge Winery is lovely at sunset, and we will be very ready to play again. I recently bought a new amp (well, not really new, but it's new to me… a 1962 Brown Fender Super), and I’m really looking forward to trying it out. See you then I hope.

New dates for September...
It's no secret that the past year and a half has been rough for live music, but there are now some signs of life, and we can't wait to get out and play. We have four dates scheduled in September. Check out our shows page for details, and please come out and join us!
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/66591602021-06-14T14:58:49-04:002023-12-10T11:46:49-05:00Last chance for the summer...Thursday June 17 in Riverdale
We did a terrible job coordinating our summer schedules. We'll all be out of town a lot, and our star-crossed travel schedules made it impossible to schedule summer dates. So Band Brulee will be on a summer vacation for the next two months. But if you're in the Riverdale area this Thursday, stop by the farmer's market by the train station. We'll be out there for one of our top secret unannounced gigs from 4:30 to 6:30. We love playing out there. Such a great community, and we thank the great Jim Coleman for keeping local music alive. In addition to Burritos and all the great local produce, be sure to pick up some of Rodney's homemade ice cream and Rudy's cookies. Tell them Band Brulee sent you.

The bad news is that most of the local indoor venues we used to play are now closed permanently due to the pandemic (Villain & Saint, Sotto, Harp & Fiddle, Twins Jazz...). The good news is that live music is starting to return! We've booked shows at three of our favorite old haunts in early September (Windridge Winery, Romano Winery, and El Golfo in Silver Spring). We'll post the details here soon. See you in the fall!
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/66479492021-06-02T22:22:32-04:002022-01-24T15:04:57-05:00Saturday June 5 at Romano Winery! 2:00 to 5:00 (last chance for this summer!)
The country seems to be opening again which is great news for live music! We'll be playing outdoors at Romano Winery this Saturday from 2:00 to 5:00 (yes, three whole sets). You can find the address and more details on our "shows" page. Romano is a gorgeous place about 45 minutes outside DC where you can drink wine and listen to our songs in the middle of truly expansive vineyards. It really feels like a vacation to Napa.

All the DC venues we used to play are now closed permanently, but the wineries (with outdoor settings) seemed to have survived, and some are having live music again, so come out and support the good people at Romano. They have a lot of tables and chairs, but you might also consider bringing your own lawn chairs and picnic blankets to set up on the grass. There's usually a pretty good food truck too, but I'm not sure what they have planned this time.

Andrew will be there, so there will be at least three of us. There seems to be a good chance that Mike can join on drums for most of the afternoon, although he'll probably be a little late.

Now here's the sad news: We did a terrible job coordinating our summer schedules, and we'll all be out of town a lot, so this will be the only public Brulee performance of the summer. Personally, I'm pretty devastated to skip our summer tradition of the Riversdale Jazz on the Lawn Series. We'll have more gigs in September, but if you want to see us before then, this is your only chance! See you Saturday I hope.
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/65726792021-03-13T09:13:36-05:002022-05-06T10:06:11-04:00Sunday May 2 at 3:00: Back on the front Porch!
It looks like we'll be having another good Sunday afternoon. Sunny and warm! So we want to get out and play! We’ll be back in our usual spot on the 5700 block of 33rd St.

We'll start at 3:00 and probably play for about 90 minutes.

This time it will just be Lou and Aura, plus any neighborhood special guest brave enough to make some noise with us. We'll be trying to get the full band out some other time soon.

See you Sunday I hope.
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/64975452020-12-11T19:59:49-05:002022-01-24T15:14:35-05:00Sunday December 13 at 12:00: Back on the Front Porch!
It looks like we’re in for an unseasonably warm weekend, so Aura and I want to get out and play! We’ll be back playing on the 5700 block of 33rd St. I think the address is 5709 33rd St. NW.

We’ll be starting at 12:00 PM. It should be around 60 degrees, so I’m hoping my hands can go for at least 60 minutes. If all feels good, we’ll go longer.

Andrew will be joining us on bass, and there’s always the chance that a neighborhood special guest or two might show up.

We’ll be playing a lot of the songs on our “seasonal” list, so you can expect some Christmassy stuff. And Aura has promised to let me play Week 52, which is a big annual moment for me. (If you want to get into the Week 52 spirit, you can find a living room recording buried deep on this website…)

Bring your masks obviously. See you Sunday I hope.
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/64621802020-10-23T17:59:28-04:002023-12-10T12:33:58-05:00Saturday Oct 24 at 4:00: Full Quartet on the front porch!
Hi friends, Big news here in Bruland: We’ve managed to gather our full band for Saturday. Andrew will be here on bass, and the elusive Mike Metzger will be joining on drums. I’ve loved our weekly little duo performances, but it’s a rare treat these days to get the whole band together.

This will be Saturday, not Sunday (we selected Saturday this time for the weather). We’ll start at 4:00, and we’ll be playing in our usual location on the 5700 block of 33rd St.

Aura’s leaving town for much of November, and after that, winter might keep us from outdoor music. So this might be our last chance for this kind of thing for quite a while. Come join us if you can.
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/64434392020-09-26T09:55:05-04:002022-05-01T20:45:27-04:00Out on the front porch: Sunday Oct 18 at 4:00
After a few weeks off, Aura and Lou will be back for another front porch show on the 5700 block of 33rd St. at 4:00. It looks like we'll have perfect fall weather, so bring your masks and beach chairs and come out to join us.

If you have any requests, send them via this website, and we'll try to be ready.
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/64365382020-09-17T16:07:36-04:002024-01-19T07:58:22-05:00Back on the Front Porch: 3:30 on Sunday, Sept 20!
After some time off for late summer wandering, we're trying to get back to our Sunday on the Porch performance schedule. Last Sunday, we were so thankful for the way the neighborhood welcomed us back, so we'll try to do it most weeks if we can. This Sunday, we'll be starting at 3:30 (a little earlier than usual) because Lou has places to be afterword.

As always, you can count on Aura and Lou to be there. Andrew seems to join us most of the time, and Mike might pop up again soon (like he did for the August 5 livestream). We're also encouraging any neighborhood musicians to join us. We'll always play some polished songs, but for this setting, the informal and unexpected seems to work well. So we'll try to keep surprising you a little every week, and requests are always welcome. See you Sunday.
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/64003222020-08-02T21:01:33-04:002022-08-11T16:24:47-04:00This Wednesday, Aug 5 at 7:30: Facebook Live Event!
The Riversdale House Museum has had to cancel their Jazz on the Lawn series this year, so instead, they've very generously partnered with us to host a Facebook Live event on the date we would have been playing our annual show out on their lawn. So join us for a FREE virtual concert on Wednesday night. All you have to do is click on our facebook page at 7:30 pm (https://www.facebook.com/BandBrulee/) and pretend we're all together in person, as if it were a normal year. And while you're there, please do all the stuff people do on facebook - like us, friend us... And if you live in Lou and Aura's neighborhood, come over to Aura's front yard to be part of our live "studio" audience. Bring beach chairs and masks and stay distant. Hope to see you there!
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/63836072020-07-12T09:23:12-04:002022-02-07T11:36:57-05:00We'll be back in August...
Band Brulee is taking off the rest of July for some socially distant non-plane travel, but we'll be back for more outdoor shows in August. We have something interesting cooking for August 5 in particular. Watch this space or contact us via this website for details. Stay safe, stay distant, stay cool, and mask up! See you in August.
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/63747022020-07-03T08:01:32-04:002022-05-22T15:36:23-04:00Find us on the Front Porch Again: 4:00 PM on Sunday July 5
We'll continue our series of Sunday afternoon, socially distant front yard concerts on Sunday afternoon at 4:00. We'll play in front of 5709 33rd St (near the corner of Northampton) for about 2 hours. We might be a trio with Andrew on bass, or it might just be the Lou and Aura Duo thing. And there's always the chance of neighbors joining for a few songs (consider yourself invited if you sing or play something).

Bring a chair or pull up a curb, and come prepared with your best requests. At these front porch things, we've taken a "we'll play anything approach." And of course, stay 6 feet apart and use masks when others are near you. See you outside on Sunday!
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/63671332020-06-26T09:57:48-04:002020-06-26T20:50:22-04:00Catch us on the front porch at 10:30 AM Saturday morning...
Hi friends and neighbors, Many of you have happened upon our Sunday afternoon front yard concerts this spring as we have made the best of a season of cancelled winery and bar gigs to serenade our neighbors instead. We've made some great new friends from safe distances, had lots of fun neighbor cameos, and really enjoyed this socially-distanced silver lining to a difficult time for so many.

We've generally been shy to advertise as we wanted to ensure safe social distancing for all, but this weekend we're switching it up and planning to play on Saturday morning due to some other commitments (and to beat the heat/rain due later), so we wanted to let folks know. We'll play in front of 5709 33rd St (near the corner of Northampton) from around 10:30-12:30 this Saturday morning (June 27). We'll be at least a trio with Andrew on bass, and Mike just might show up on drums.

It would be a great time to grab a pastry from the farmer's market or a coffee from Broad Branch, bring a chair or pull up a curb, and settle in for some original music and cover favorites that range from soul to bossa to alt 80s. We'd love to see some of you there, and we'll keep our fingers crossed that the leaf blowers don't come for us!

We'll probably return to Sunday afternoons at 4:00ish next week, but everything remains a little uncertain these days, so if you ever want to confirm before coming out, you can always contact us via this website.
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/62968952020-04-28T09:35:21-04:002022-02-26T11:05:30-05:00New Front Porch Video: Aura and Lou play "What else can I do"
Band Brulee is maintaining social distance like everyone else right now, but Aura and Lou have been trying not to fall into a state of musical distance. Click here for a new video, expertly filmed by Lisa with a very steady hand on her iphone, filmed on Lou's front porch to support the Quarantunes organization. The song is What Else Can I Do, originally written by Lou about raising kids (and girls in particular) during the past few years. I won't get political here, but I think you know what I mean.

Although the song wasn't written specifically for this wildly unexpected spring of 2020, the sentiments seem relevant (The key to gettin' through is just keep showin' up). And if you're not the kind of person who listens to lyrics, hopefully you can dig the moving bassline or the sound of that 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb.

When we've played this song for people at shows, I often get requests for a recording. We still don't have a smooth studio recording, but hopefully, this front porch version will suffice for now, and we'll get back to the studio when we're all able to meet again in tight spaces with microphones.
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/62559162020-03-20T08:55:40-04:002022-03-22T06:04:09-04:00Like everything else...cancelled
For reasons you already know, all our shows in March have been cancelled. Right now, we're trying to stay optimistic that life and music can return to normal by late April, so April and May dates are still on our calendar. But with each passing day, this is seeming less likely. We'll update the website with the latest news, and we really can't wait to see everyone out in public again sometime. Maybe we'll use some of the down time to write new songs. Stay safe out there.
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/60460622019-12-26T13:07:17-05:002021-08-01T17:20:40-04:00Happy Week 52!
It's no secret that our favorite holiday is the week of emptiness and easy parking here in DC between Christmas and New Year's, known as Week 52. If you need help getting into the spooky romantic Week 52 spirit, you can scroll to the bottom of our music page to hear our living room recording of the Week 52 theme song. So have fun, take some time to think about the first 51 weeks of 2019, and try not to trip over all those Christmas trees left out on the sidewalk. We hope to see you at our two shows in the first week of January, now listed on the shows page.
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/48378232017-09-05T12:36:25-04:002022-05-11T06:31:56-04:00Band Brulee on Danish Radio, Wed Sept 6!
Our amazing multi-instrumentalist Johannes Langkilde will be interviewed on Danish National Radio tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday Sept 6). He'll be playing at least one previously unreleased song from our most recent recording session, maybe two songs. I think he'll start with "Lemonade Fridays." So if you're in Denmark, check it out!
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/48338002017-08-31T21:16:45-04:002022-03-19T06:48:27-04:00This Sunday, Sept 3... Goodbye (for now) to Lex
In anticipation of the weather our event at Running Hare Vineyard has been changed from Saturday to SUNDAY (September 3) from 1-5 PM. We hope you'll join us for a perfectly sunny afternoon.

First, the good news: Brûlée is back from summer break and will be playing SUNDAY afternoon from 1-5 PM at a brand new venue for us - the gorgeous Running Hare Vineyard in southern Maryland (150 Adelina Rd, Prince Frederick, MD), with fine wines and craft beers about an hour from DC. Vineyard Pizza will have their wood fired ovens up and running, or pack a picnic of your favorite treats. The $10 cover charge includes a wine tasting. Bring kids if you have 'em, and we'll bring Dave Klein on sax!

Now for the bad news: Austria has won the battle for our beloved drummer Lex (for now!), and this will be his last official gig with Brûlée for the time being. Lex founded this band with us, and we're not quite sure how to even imagine a post-Lex band (The best approach might be to simply drink a lot of Running Hare wine). The drums will soon be in wildly capable hands (as soon as those hands heal from his summer boating accident), with the fabulous Mike Metzger planning to join us full time starting in October after some serious physical therapy. But we will so miss Lex's irrepressible and irreplaceable genius, and he's a big part of our little family, so we hope he knows we're always here when he needs his band or his friends.

Back to the good news, before we get teary: You can spend the SUNDAY of your Labor Day weekend with us as we celebrate the dwindling days of summer and send our drummer off with the best darn sets of music we've ever played.
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/47509762017-06-20T11:48:08-04:002022-05-01T20:47:40-04:00Goodbye (for now) to Johannes...
Our keyboard/harmonica player, bluescaster, and (most importantly) friend Johannes Langkilde flew back to Denmark on Sunday. It's now impossible for us to play these songs without imagining his sly riffs, endless enthusiasm, and witty virtuosity. We hope he'll manage to find his way back to us soon. For now, we're so thankful that he's ben a part of the Brulee family for the past two years, and his seat in the band will always be open for him whenever he returns or passes through Washington DC. Johannes, we hope you know how much you're missed back here!

We'll try to carry on without Johannes for two final shows before our annual summer break: Wednesday (with special guest David Klein on alto sax) at the great summer jazz series in Riverdale and Saturday down at Gemeny Winery. See our shows page for details, and come join us. We could use a little extra support this week...
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/44320852016-10-22T12:04:24-04:002016-10-22T12:04:24-04:00A Brulee update after a surprisingly musical summer…
New gigs have been announced! Click on the shows page for details, and please come out to see us. Now, a quick review of recent months:

You may remember that, back in June, we predicted a 5-month musical hiatus for Brulee while we all took turns leaving the country for a while, particularly Lex who (FINALLY!) returns from Austria in mid-November. We were wrong. It’s actually been quite busy! Here’s a review of a few recent events in Bruland:

A REALLY big gig: You’ve probably heard us talking about our beloved new-ish keyboard/trumpet/harmonica player Johannes Langkilde. Johannes tells us that he’s sort of a big deal in Denmark, and occasionally, we have to believe him. For example, the Danish Ambassador (a great guy named Lars who can really rock a Strat through a pair of Marshall Amps) asked if Johannes could put together an R&B band for a gala at the Smithsonian Castle to celebrate a visit from the Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark. Johannes started with the core of Brulée (Aura, Lou, Andrew, and Johannes himself) and then added a second singer, a drummer to replace Lex, and a three piece horn section. The drummer and horn section were borrowed from the president’s own Marine band. Seriously, Barack himself gave us his horn section for the evening. It was a super-fancy black-tie occasion as we busted out horn-laden R&B covers for a dancing prince and princess. I got to live my dream of playing Earth, Wind, and Fire's "September" with a full horn section.

Adding to the surreal evening, the Danish Embassy flew in the princess’ favorite singer-songwriter from Denmark, a young and wildly talented guy named Mads Langer. We got to back him up on a two songs, and it was quite a thrill, especially when he busted out an unexpected impromptu Prince cover in the middle of one of his songs.

Recording: We finally returned to Bias Studios early in the summer start recording for our next CD (or digital download if you’re more modern than we are). Like last time, we are working with the great Mike Monseur, an extraordinary studio engineer who is uniquely well-suited for our quirky musical style and strong personalities. Three moments from the recording sessions stand out to me as particularly memorable: (1) When all five of us (including our new-ish keyboard player Johannes) sang back up vocals simultaneously on Week 52, (2) Mike coaching me through the rather precise ukulele work on Part-Time Island Girl, and (3) Mike telling me that my guitar solo on Irresistible was totally inappropriate and sending home to come up with a new idea.

Some small gigs: With Lex out of the country, we’ve focused on some smaller gigs, and it’s actually been a great experience to focus on a pared down version of our music for a while. We played a couple of trio gigs, and Aura and I played a duo show with Andrew joining us purely on vocals (like, singing his basslines!). And last weekend, Andrew and I played an evening of guitar-bass jazz duets at a fundraiser for the Democratic Party of Virginia. The evening included a truly inspiring speech from Hillary Clinton’s national political director.

Now we’re more than ready for our beloved drummer Lex to return. So come join us for some shows this fall and winter to help welcome him back.
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/40848972016-03-12T09:29:56-05:002021-12-23T11:04:11-05:00New shows all over...and check out Andrew's short film!
Thanks so much to everyone who came out for our big night at Villain & Saint in Bethesda last Friday! I give it two thumbs up.
Band Brûléetag:bandbrulee.com,2005:Post/39004732015-10-16T12:51:31-04:002022-05-01T20:46:42-04:00Today's blog entry: "What kind of music do you play?Whenever anyone hears that I play in a band, the first question is always “What kind of music do you play?” For some musicians, the answer is quite easy. I assume Joshua Redman can simply answer “jazz”, and Loudon Wainwright can effortlessly say “folk.” For us, however, it’s not so easy. I usually end up mumbling something long and confusing before changing the subject (e.g., “sort of jazzy, but sometimes kinda rockin’, with an occasional funk vibe, and some American singer-songwriter stuff, sometimes all in the same song, um, how was your weekend?”).

From early on, Aura and I agreed that our band wouldn’t have to settle on one sound. We could have jazz chords, a little polish, some very quiet moments, some loud biting parts, some introspection, occasional goofiness, and any other sound that seems to fit the mood of the song we’re working on. I think it’s easier to market and book a band that fits a single category, but Brûlée wasn’t created for marketing purposes.

The fun thing about playing in a band that can conjure so many moods that we get to play lots of different kinds of gigs. This past summer had a couple of jazz shows (Takoma Park JazzFest, Riversdale House Museum Jazz on the Lawn). Tonight, we’ll be playing a loud rock thing at Roofer’s Union to the late-night Adams Morgan crowd. Tomorrow, we have the honor of playing a backyard party to celebrate a friend’s 2-year-old daughter who recently beat cancer. In November, we’ll be playing our first folky acoustic gig in quite a while. So if you come see us at two consecutive gigs, you might be surprised by the contrasts.

And we’ve booked Villain and Saint for March of next year. I expect that to be one of the nights where we can play all sides of our music. December seems to bring out the most free-wheelin' side of Brulee, so you can expect a few unrehearsed seasonal tunes that would be completely inappropriate in any other month ("Last Christmas" maybe?).

This is also the time of year I can convince Aura to sing two of my favorite Brulee originals: (1) Week 52, which is about the spooky romantic vibe of Washington DC during the last week of the year when almost everyone seems to be somewhere else. (2) January, which is about a Sunday in January several years ago when everything seemed particularly new.

Click on the "music" page, and scroll to the bottom to hear unreleased, unpolished, and hopefully charming versions of both songs.Band Brûlée
